WHAT IS PICKLEBALL?One of the fastest-growing sports in the world today, pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The game and simple rules are easy for beginners to learn but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. It combines many elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis and can be played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court.
WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT DO I NEED AND WHERE CAN I GET IT?All you need is a paddle and a ball. Both can be borrowed from the Lakehouse by signing them out during open Lakehouse hours. Both can also be purchased online or at local sports retailers such as Academy or Dick’s Sporting Goods. Balls come in an indoor (usually smaller holes and made of a harder material) and outdoor variety. Although there are numerous places to play pickleball indoors in Houston, we recommend that you start with an outdoor ball because we have four of our own outdoor pickleball courts here at Del Webb Sweetgrass.
BUT WHAT DO I WEAR?Players wear just about anything comfortable and appropriate for the climate: athletic shorts, sweatpants, wicking apparel, t-shirts, etc. Tennis-style dresses and skirts for females are common. Comfortable court shoes are a must; sneakers or running shoes do not supply the right kind of support for the side-to-side action inherent in pickleball. Eye protection is highly recommended. As for accessories, players may wear hats, visors, sweatbands and light jackets or sweatshirts for cold outdoor play.
